Plantar Fasciitis - My Achilles heel

We know what an Achilles heel is - a weakness in spite of overall strength, which can actually or potentially lead to downfall. But what is Plantar Fasciitis and why it has become my Achilles heel?

Well to start with, 'heel' is common in both. And perhaps it is the severe pain in the heel, that is what Plantar Fasciitis is, the Achilles heel was coined to show great weakness as a pain in the heel is really devastating and utterly agonizing. I did not know this till I got Plantar Fasciitis a month ago.

Initially I attributed the pain to my slippers which have a straight hard bed - but then by and by even driving became difficult as despite driving an automatic car, the accelerator pedal has to be pressed with my right foot and the heel pain continued to grow more painful. Moreover, the pain got worse in mornings when trying to stand on the feet while getting out of the bed.

Like all good pain bearers, I continued to endure it till it became difficult for me to walk or even to drive. I consulted many sites on the internet to find a remedy, and did try some 'unique' home remedies to cure my heel pain - but nothing happened. It is then my family forced me to visit the doctor and get a treatment for it.

The doctor knew well what my problem was and gave me two tablets: One to fight inflammation and other for muscle relaxation in addition to a few exercises that I could do at home and insertion of a heel pad in my shoe.

And the miracle happened right after the first day of medicine and exercises - the pain subsided to a great extent. And now I can walk comfortably without giving any sign of heel pain - my Achilles heel has gone and so the Plantar Fasciitis.

If you happen to have a heel pain, do not delay it and visit your doctor ASAP - lest you want to endure pain and then still visiting the doctor as the pain will never go away with proper treatment.

Beware of Magnesium Deficiency

Nature has designed and build our bodies with a complex operating system. Unless the input to the operating system are correct, the system may malfunction - sometimes with very adverse results. We there must be cognizant of maintaining levels of various minerals and other required healthy substances.

While consuming various supplements, we generally consume calcium for strengthening bones and other deficiencies - but a recent research shows that magnesium deficiency is more pronounced in patients suffering from osteoporosis or the brittling of bones rather than calcium deficiency as commonly believed.

In fact doctors and nutrients warn that over 90% people are magnesium deficient and try to cure their deficiency symptoms with calcium rather than the actual deficient magnesium supplements or even adding diets rich in magnesium.

Those suffering from following ailments should be concerned about their magnesium deficiency and get a detailed blood test to ascertain the truth behind their ailments.

Following are some of the indicators and signs of magnesium deficiency:Muscle spasms and cramps

  • Arteries calcification - linked with heart diseases and heart attack
  • High blood pressure / Hypertension - low magnesium level leads to blood pressure and hypertension
  • Anxiety and depression - magnesium deficiency can lead to neuron damage and cell death
  • Hormone problems - pregnant women have lower magnesium level as estrogen and progesterone levels become higher. That is the reason why pregnant women suffer from cramps in the legs and also in the second half of their menstrual cycle when estrogen and progesterone are also higher and magnesium level is lower.
  • Sleep problems  - Magnesium can also affect the good night sleep
  • Low energy - magnesium deficiency can lead to lack of desire, low energy, fatigue and other problems
  • Deficiencies of other minerals - Magnesium deficiency can inhibit or slow down proper use of Vitamin K and D, potassium, calcium and many other nutrients
So what to do? Well doctors and nutrients stress on maintaining health level of magnesium in the body and if one or more above mention symptoms are notices, specially low energy and fatigue and sleepless nights, it is time to get a magnesium level check up. And if there is a magnesium deficiency, use supplement and consume foods that are rich in magnesium, like:
  • Banana
  • Spinach
  • Black beans
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Almonds
  • Figs
  • Avocado
  • Chard
  • Dark chocolate
Don't delay to check your magnesium level - you have been warned!!

Health benefits of Castor Oil

Many believe that Castor Oil is only helpful in resolving gastrointestinal problems and constipation. But there is much more to castor oil which may surprise those who feel that way.

In fact castor oil has an immense anti-inflamatory and anti-oxident properties which is usefel for a number of difficult and intricatee diseases as it strenthens the immune system.

Some of the major ailments that can helped to be cured are:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Hodgkin’s Disease
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Hair loss
  • Pain from Arthritis and Rheumatism
  • Hernia
  • Appendicitis
  • Gallstones
  • Hepatitis

For patients suffering from MS castor oil may help in dissolving and removing lesions. A study may have some relevance to treatment of MS by using castor oil with its relation to functioning of the liver. I came across following to support the earlier suggestion that castor oil removes and dissolves lesions:
Cayce castor oil packs could be useful for MS because Cayce said that the glands associated with the liver (specifically the right lobe of the liver in some cases) were involved in the occurrence of MS. Castor oil was often suggested by Cayce in various kinds of illnesses and one of the things castor oil packs did was help in cases where liver function was sluggish (Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E., 2010).So, it is possible, that since glands associated with the right lobe of the liver are involved in MS, possibly castor oil packs could be helpful in restoring liver function and in that sense it could help to heal MS.

Patients suffering from arthritis and joint pains can make a cotton pad, soak it in castor oil, place it on the pain point, cover it with a plastic bag and put a hot water bottle or a heating pad over it and leave it for 45 minutes. The plastic bag covering is to avoid the oil greasing the bottle or pad. Read more about castor oil pads here.

Castor oil is mostly applied on the skin or taken orally - Do consult your doctor before using castor oil if taking it orally.

Get rid of Visceral Fat – before it gets you

Photo Credit Monkey Business Images/Monkey Business/Getty Images

There are a lot of people around us who have let their waist increase beyond normal healthy levels and have accumulated pounds of flesh around their wastes – making it difficult to wear ‘already stitched’ clothes and even if these are worn by some magic, it become difficult to breathe and sit as buttons start to blow away. Experts say when a man’s waist measures more than 40 inches, and that of a woman 35 inches, it is time that we take stock of our growing weight caused by something that is now known as Visceral Fat – a term which may be new to many whose bellies are swelling by inches every few months.

Those having excessive Visceral Fat are in fact adding more coating of fats around their internal organs like the liver, pancreas and intestines – thus adding risks of Type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and Alzheimer's disease at later stages of their lives.

It is thus time now that we should know what Visceral Fat is and how to get rid of it before it gets us in the form of diseases mentioned above.

As can be seen in the diagram below, Visceral Fat is the form of bad fat, just like the bad cholesterol, that forms between our internal organs, which makes our abdomen to swell from the inside and from the outside makes our belly to swell.

Photo Credit  Mayo Foundation fro Medical Education and Research

So what to do? Well, if your wasit line crosses 40, change your daily routine, which for many is around a computer table where we sit for hours without a break or because of our excessive eating habits of junk food that add layers of fats around our waists.

As per recent studies, our body requires some 3,500 calories per day to add another pound of fat – so if we cut down 500 calories per day from our diet, we can trim a pound per week from our bellies. But more than dieting, a 45-60 minutes walking-running-jogging combination coupled with some exercise that aid in strengthening abdominal muscles may also help to reduce Visceral Fat.

Read more about Visceral Fat on the net, by taking a time off from Facebook where we spend endless time unnecceraily and get wiser on how to get rid of Visceral Fat – remember if you don’t read about it and do something to reduce your Visceral Fat, it will get you.

You have been warned – and so I am!!

Drink three cups of coffee a day - to beat back cardiovascular diseases

Coffee is one the most favoured drink around the world. If it is properly brewed, specially from the fresh beans, the aroma and taste is simply fantastic.

But other than drinking coffee for taste, relaxation and simple enjoyment, it has many health benefits. Although, the health benefits of coffee related to the cardiovascular diseases have always been subject to agreements and disagreements, a latest study shows that three coffees a day cuts risk of heart attacks or should we say drinking a moderate amount found to reduce clogging of the arteries.

Researchers found those who drink a moderate amount each day are least likely to have 'coronary calcium' in their arteries – an early indicator of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The study has been carried out by scientists who studied a group of more than 25,000 Korean men and women with an average age of 41, who had no signs of heart disease. They found the prevalence of detectable CAC was 13.4 per cent amongst the whole group while the average amount of coffee drunk was 1.8 cups per day.

Their findings showed the calcium ratios were 0.77 for people who had less than one cup per day, 0.66 for those having one to three cups every day, 0.59 for those consuming three to five cups per day, and 0.81 for people having at least five cups or more every day compared with non-coffee drinkers.

Please read more about this latest discovery and findings of the study at the Daily Mail. You may start taking coffee - not only for enjoyment and taste, but also to take care of your cardiovascular health too.

By the way, see the video below to know how to make a perfect cup of coffee:

Green tea can KILL cancer cells

Green tea has always been liked by people around the world for easy digestion and weight reduction. Chinese and people of East Asian countries take this wonder tea more than coffee and black tea.

But that is not all what green tea can do to better your health.

But now a study has found that a compound in green tea has been found to kill mouth cancer cells while leaving healthy cells undamaged. The breakthrough involved identifying the process by which the substance attacks cancer cells.

The study has been carried out by scientists at Penn State University, in the US, which explored the specific mechanism by which the green tea compound is able to target the diseased cells.

Scientists now believe Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), a compound found in green tea, may trigger a process in the mitochondria - the powerhouse of a cell that produces energy - that leads to cell death.

The magical healing powers of Papaya

I first came across papaya when I had just said goodbye to my teens and entered in my professional life. My first posting was in Karachi and my boss was very fond of eating this yellowish-orange looking fruit in his office first thing in the morning. The mess waiter told me that he was eating something called as papaya.

I haven't really befriended it since the for it is neither sweet nor sour or even bitter. It is kinda a tasteless unless one is lucky to get a just-ripe papaya which is more sweet than being tasteless.

But if we go by its many health benefits, then one would sacrifice its taste and eat it to remain healthy and hearty. Some of the many health benefits of papaya are as under:

  • It supports cardiovascular system
  • It alleviates inflamation
  • It encourages renewal of muscle tissues
  • It is good for treatment of skin wounds - use papaya peel for treating wounds
  • Its daily use prevents or aids in preventing formation of cataracts of eyes
  • It helps constipation and nausea
  • And it is also said to prevent many causes of colon cancer and gastrointestinal system
Almost ripe Papayas of my home garden

Seeing its many health benefits, my wife has planted a  pair of papaya trees and is giving wonderful fruit - perhaps many may not know that papaya is the only fruit tree which does not give fruit unless the male and female trees are planted together.

Coffee may have an answer for skin cancer

Who would not love to drink a cup of coffee when it rains or snows? I would always.

But here something about coffee - more than just keeping you cozy and warm. It can be an answer to protect patients suffering from malignant melanoma.

Malignant melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. It usally starts in mole and is triggered by short, sharp bursts of sunlight.

A study recently conducted reveals that four cups of coffee a day can serve as a protective cover against malignant melanoma. Scientists from the US government’s health research department tracked 450,000 men and women for a decade before giving away their opinion.

The volunteers had an average age of 63 at the start of the study when all were free of malignant melanoma. By the end, almost 3,000 had been diagnosed with the skin cancer. But those who drank coffee – 90 per cent of the group – were less likely to have the disease. The more they drank, the lower their odds, reported the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

However, this is just the beginning as the researchers said that their finding is preliminary and more research into coffee and, in particular caffeine, ‘are warranted’.

Fermented foods - cure for type 2 diabetes and more

Cheese is said to boost immunity, fight allergies and even help you lose weight
We have been depending upon normal drugs for years to cure ourselves of allergies, cough, cold or even type 2 diabetes  But we never looked towards food as a means of cure for our illness and unwellness.

Now here is a breakthrough - fermented foods - left to age for anything from a few days to weeks before they're eaten - can cure diseases much easier and quicker than ordinary drugs do.

In fact with the breakthrough, it has become fashionable in USA to ferment vegetables and drink kombucha - a fizzy, fermented tea drunk for centuries in China.

A research at Cambridge University asserts that regular consumption of fermented low-fat dairy foods, such as yoghurt, fromage frais and cottage cheese, could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 25 per cent over 11 years.

The study shows that When certain foods are left to ferment, they are 'pre-digested' by good bacteria and yeast found naturally on the surface of the food. These microbes eat the food before you do, breaking down the sugars and starches and making the nutrients easier for the body to absorb.

Some also release lactic acid, a natural preservative, which acidifies the environment in the gut, stimulating the growth of good bacteria. The fermented food effectively becomes a natural probiotic supplement.

Bacteria's role in health has attracted much attention in recent years and experts welcome the new interest in 'living' foods, as fermented food is also known.

It may be added that idea of eating fermented yoghurt and cheese is not new. A study by immunologists at Spain's University of Granada - published in 2006 in the Journal of Dairy Research - looked at people who ate at least five portions of yoghurt and cheese, and three other fermented foods such as cured meats and olives, each week.

Tomato juice glass a day - may keep the breast cancer away

The age old saying 'An apple a day - keeps the doctor away' may now be need to be worded a little different for the benefit of women. It should now read as: A tomato juice glass a day - may keep the breast cancer away !!

A US based research has concluded that the advantages of eating plenty of tomatoes and tomato-based products, even for a short period of time, raised level of adiponectin by nine per cent - sufficient to keep the onset of breast cancer disease at bay. Adiponectin is involved in regulating fat levels and obesity is known to raise the odds of breast cancer.

However, the study also observed that Levels of the hormone rose most in thinner women. Thus the need to keep onself thin and avoid obesity.

The study adds that a glass of tomato juice a day would contain the right amount of the lycopene, the plant chemical believed to be behind the effects. Lycopene gives tomatoes their rich red colour and is already believed to help ward off prostate cancer.

However, those who don't like tomato juice could try a bowl of tomato soup, plus tomato sauce with their pasta and dollop of ketchup a day.

Top 10 Weight Losing Tips

OK Look who is talking - me who has started to put on weight and has done nothing so far. But it really hurts when your clothes start to tell you that they are no more yours and that you either visit a tailor for new outfits or else get on the jogging track to be in shape again.

Yes the reality is one must keep in shape to live a healthy life and cling to one's lovable wardrobe. Getting new clothes stitched to suit to your new body contours is not the answer. So if you are obese, you must get into shape by walking away from computer chair more often, running a few blocks and taking stairs instead of that inviting escalator  and feel lighter and happier.

But yet still, there is lot more you can do to remain in shape - but no dieting please. Here are some tips the wise guys around the world profess - we only need to pay head to their experience and apply it on our badly shaped figures and make take these to times when they looked good on us.

Here we go:
  • Before losing weight, buy a weighing machine and weigh yourself every morning before breakfast. This would keep reminding you how much you have done, and 'how much more' you need to do. Remember the DO MORE thing?
  • Never workout a fitness plan all by yourself - always pick a friend: 'A like minded One' - the one who too needs to be in shape. Together you two can work it out when jogging or even walking. A partner means a motivation to move on despite odds, which while being alone means cutting back daily allowance of exercise and coming back home early.
  • And coupled with waling (brisk walking I mean) and jogging, stretch out yourself daily. Simple stretching exercise while lying down flat on the floor add more to your shape. However, remember ot do these exercise as per your body ability. In case of back pain, you have to consult a doctor before trying stretching exercises.
  • Eat good food - full in energy and lesser in fats. Sugars and chocolate biscuits are easy to eat - but these silently add much more than you may imagine. One chocolate biscuit means 400 calories - you eat 3-4 biscuits and you are already done up with your day's calories needs.

  • Drink lot of water - well this is what doctors stress on but we ignore this simple weight reducing technique. Drink more water in the morning and gradually reduce it. Do not drink lots of water at night. Regulate your water therapy and watch the water wonder working.
  • Eat fish, eggs and poultry - and did I miss oatmeal? Well Oatmeal is a good filler and can be a good late night 'snack' rather than chips and fried stuff we innocently take out of the freezer and fry and eat.
  • Take multivitamins to regain your lost energy if you redesign your eating habits. Also do not forget to take high EPA/DHA fish oil - this will help you shed fat - real fast.
  • And do not miss out green tea - Chinese drink green tea, without sugar, throughout the day. This balances out your metabolism and help in reducing fats.
  • Replace your cooking oil with olive oil - extra virgin olive oil is best to reduce weight as other cooking oils add dirty fats to your body.
  • And for God sake do not get new clothes stitched - have the determination to wear these once again as your body comes back to shape.
I am starting all this from this day right on - when are you?

Your blood group can affect your heart disease risk

A person’s blood group helps determine their risk of heart disease, a study has found.

Researchers claim almost half of Britons with blood group O, the most common blood type, benefit from some natural protection against the illness.

However, they said people from groups A and B are more at risk, while people from AB, the rarest blood group, are the most vulnerable.

The findings, published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, are based on an analysis of two large US health and lifestyle studies.

The Harvard University researchers concluded people with blood group AB were 23 per cent more likely to suffer from heart disease.

Group B blood increased the risk by 11 per cent, and type A by 5 per cent.

It is thought people with type O blood may benefit from a substance that is thought to assist blood flow and reduce clotting.

Lead researcher Professor Lu Qi, from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, said ‘While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk for developing heart disease.

‘It’s good to know your blood type the same way you should know your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers.
