Wawrinka shocks world no.1 Djokovic to win Roland Garros

Did you expect this? Well I did not - but in the heart of my heart I had a doubt that made me suspicious of Djokovic winning the Roland Garros this year.

It seemed the world no.1 was a little over confident and a bit proud for sailing smoothly to the finals - specially after beating nine time Roland Garros winner and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. And perhaps he never thought of  a setback at the hand of world no.8 in the finals.

But he was to be surprised in the finals today when a rather docile Stanislas Wawrinka stunned and shocked world number one Novak Djokovic 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 to win the French Open - and his second Grand Slam title.

Wawrinka, the eight seed, was not deterred after losing the first set to Djokovic and hit back with all his might and tact to over awe the Serb and dominated him in the next three sets to win the Roland Garros men's single title for year 2015 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.

"I played the match of my life, it's hard to believe. Playing against Novak was one of the biggest challenges. I know how much he wanted this Roland Garros," Wawrinka said after the match.

Huacachina – Peru: A desert oasis invites tourists who dare

About three years ago, I shared a post about a desert oasis in the sizzling hot Gobi Desert of China. Many of my readers doubted the authenticity of the existence of a lake right in the centre of one of the hottest deserts of the world where water evaporates in seconds. But it was right there – an oasis with a crescent shaped lake.

An oasis with a crescent shaped lake in one of the hottest deserts of the world: The Gobi Desert (China)

But as if that was just the beginning. There is yet a similar lakes right in the desert of Peru at Huacachina which has recently been an attractive tourist and travel destination from people around the world.

Huacachina – Peru - Just see the similarity between the two oases

The town of Huacachina is located in one of the driest place on the earth with only 96 residents. But it has hotels enough to accommodate those daring tourists who would not only like to enjoy a boat ride or a swim in the lake but also sandboard on the slops of the high dunes surrounding the oasis.

The unique and awesome Huacachina oasis is situated only 4km from the southern city of Ica, a former Spanish colonial town located on the borders of the desert. Today, descendents of the Inca people make their living by hosting guests coming from afar to climb to the top of a wind-sculptured sand dune and watch the sunset illuminate the golden landscape, before sailing down the slopes on rented sandboards or dune buggies.

The lake is naturally formed, but there is a legend that a young princess was bathing when she was discovered by a hunter and fled, leaving behind a pool of water. Her flowing cloak was said to have created the surrounding sand dunes.

Watch tourists sandboarding on the high dunes surrounding the Huacachina oasis in the video below:

World's largest standalone structure opens in China

How big can a stand alone structure be - any guess?

Well think of Sydney Opera which we usually see on new year night under fireworks - if you think anything twice as big as Sydney Opera is big - you are mistaken.

China has opened its New Century Global Center to the public in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan province, June 28, 2013. And this world's largest standalone structure is 'big enough' to house TWENTY Sydney Opera Houses under its roof - that is really big and world's biggest.

This huge structure has 1.7 million square meters of floor space to house business offices, hotels, theaters, shopping malls, a faux Mediterranean village, and attractions including a water park called "Paradise Island."

Beside, it will feature a mix of retail outlets, a 14-screen movie theater, a university complex, offices, hotels, a water park called Paradise Island, a skating rink that's big enough to host international competitions, a pirate ship, 15,000 parking spots, and even a fake Mediterranean village.

The  New Century Global Center is 328 feet high, 1,640 feet long, and 1,312 feet wide.

So the New Century Global Center to the public in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan province, should be on the list of your next travel destination if you are planning a visit to China. Shouldn't it be?

Man United and City move Three Points Ahead - Continue with six points differential

When Manchester United and City played their matches today, no one had any doubt that there would be any set backs.

The Red Devils took on the Sunderland right in their home and earned three more points beating the Sunderland 3-1.

The Citizens too moved ahead and earned three more points when they beat Newcastle 3-1.

It seemed both Manchesters wanted to finish their matches with same score. Now as of today, the Red Devils have crossed 40 and are still on the top of the world with 42 points, followed by the Citizens with 36 points, clinging to their second position. However, the differential continues to be six as before.

-->

However, Chelsea seems to have been left much behind with 29 points though still at the third position. The Blues are now threatened by Everton with 27 points and Tottenham and West Brom each with 26 points.

Days ahead are getting tougher - wont't you say so?

Thatta Cement in the African Desert

I just came across a news story at Business Insider with the caption 'You Have To See What These US Soldiers Built In The Middle Of The African Desert.' Just out of curiosity I clicked on the slide show of what amazing feat was being accomplished by the American soldiers. Well as I went thought the slide show, I did not find something very unusual that soldiers of a highly advanced country could think of - nor was it an architectural marvel.

But one can appreciate the mind of simple soldiers, who came up with building an igloo like living that could save them from the scorching heat of the summers right in the middle of the African desert.

While going through the slide show, however, I suddenly stopped on the following slide: You know why?

They start mixing up a a cocktail of cement, dirt, and water

Just concentrate once more and you would know why: It is the Thatta Cement bag being used for the construction of this igloo the American soldiers were making.

And many of you would know where does this Thatta Cement came from - from the scorching Thatta city of the Sind Province of Pakistan. Thatta Cement should be proud of their cement being used thousands of miles away in the African desert by the American soldiers for making something for which the Business Insider has shared the post.

Manhattanhenge: An evening of a million camera clicks

Each country and a city has something special of its own that attracts not only the natives or the citry dwellers but also travelers and tourists from other parts of the country or even the world over. This may be a sunset or a sunrise, a shadow of buildings or a ray of light falling on a unique angle.

Like wise the New Yorkers have a day that comes twice a year called the Manhattanhenge - a day when the evening sunset attracts countless New Yorkers and tourists on the streets of Manhattan to view the sun set. Now you would be curious to ask as to what is special about this sun set that attracts these enthusiasts only twice a year on the Manhattan streets.

'Solstice': The 'Manhattanhenge' glow that occurs when the sun aligns precisely with the street grid in Manhattan wasn't as impressive as in previous years
'Solstice': The 'Manhattanhenge' glow - captured here by Instagram user Kyle_dc - that occurs when the sun aligns precisely with the street grid in Manhattan. However, this time it wasn't as impressive as in previous years due to clouds and rain. [Photo: kyle_dc/Instagram / Daily Mail]

Now let me tell you why there is a crowd on the streets of Manhattan: The 'Manhattanhenge' glow that occurs twice annually when the sun aligns precisely with the street grid in Manhattan was not as impressive as in previous years. With clouds and rain showers in the distance, when the sunset alignments illuminated both the north and south sides of every cross street was a bit of a damper.  And as the sun goes down between the Manhattan tall skyscrapers, they say there are millions of camera clicks to preserve the moment - no doubt such moments don't come handy every time these occur.

So next time you plan a trip to New York, plan it so that you get the glimpse of the sunset or the Manhattanhenge - as it occurs twice a year and it is really fun watching the sun dip vertically down between tall skyscrapers of New York and enjoy the fun along with the New Yorkers and many tourists who plan their trips around the dates when the Manhattanhenge occurs.

Good news for bloggers

Everyone seems to love blogs these days and a vast majority of internet users express their ideas and aspirations through their personal blogs. And so do I and am always for a lookout for forums that allow bloggers a wider audiance . Recently, I came to a classic blogging site that is unique in its approach and mindset. Yes I am talking of YouSayToo, which provides the bloggers a platform to add their blogs, post their writings and thus become part of a larger community to share and exchange views, thus promoting their blogs.

And for those who want to earn money on line, they can receive compensation for some of their posts. Also Revenue Sharing programme helps to earn more from the Adsense account. Those with a kind heart can also donate their earned money for a cause, which the YouSayToo gladly facilitates.

YouSayToo is not only about blogging, it has a much larger sphere of activities of helping out its community. If for example you are looking for cheap and reasonable living, YouSayToo takes you to HUD apartments for rent, a social programme meant to assisting people of low income group and help finding a reasonable apartment. The programme is best suited for overseas students with meager financial resources and families that cannot afford expensive apartments.

And those who love luxurious life style and often go for holidaying in the warm waters of Dubai, there are good news. A unique US $ 350 million 7-star 28 floor Aperiron new hotel Dubai project is being undertaken inside the sea. With its 438 luxury suites, it will have everything that one’s imagination can explore. Gul Hameed Bhatti – A Man Born for Cricket

Those of us who love or read about cricket would be familiar with this name. Whenever cricket is talked about and analyzed, Gul Hameed Bhatti is consulted and expert opinion sought for he is considered an authority on Cricket statistics. He has not reached this place very easily for he has spent all his life for cricket – sacrificing many a opportunity that came his way but he chose cricket and cricket only.

I know Gul Hameed Bhatti since our childhood (he being my eldest brother) and I have seen him nurturing and maturing into a cricket man from his very early life. Eldest of us five brothers, he had a passion for cricket from the very childhood and he wanted to make a name in it. Those were the times when abduction of little children was very high, and our father being from Police (serving in Interpol) kept us at home after school time and wouldn’t allow us out after we came back from the school. While we all five brothers played cricket in our small courtyard (we called this domestic cricket as “Ghehgray Chalegray” – I don’t know how and who of us coined this word as it didn’t mean nothing but cricket). In his free time, Gul chose to play cricket on papers. He would make two teams, make them play and then record the entire innings with detailed analyses and hand drawn photos of action of bowlers and batsmen. He would write so artfully that it would look as it were typed. There are cartons full of such notebooks still packed somewhere in his house which were (and I hope still are) his prized possession.

But our late father wasn’t impressed. Like all fathers of his time, he also wanted Gul to be become a doctor, so he insisted upon him to opt for pre-medical in his high school. Which he did, but wasn’t much in it with his heart. So he couldn’t become a doctor. Then my mother wanted him to be a pilot as one of my maternal uncles (Captain Khusro Nawaz Khan) was in those days one of the best pilots of PIA. So he made the preliminaries, went to Karachi for initial training and came back to Lahore to get his solo license. He flew for 45 hours, but then he opted not to be a pilot either.

At that stage, he was given a choice to do what he felt like, so he took admission in journalism in the Punjab University. He did well as journalism was close to his passion of writing about cricket and obtained his Masters with honour and distinction. He continued to write about cricket and then for the first time joined “The Cricketer” by one Riaz A Mansuri and started writing from Lahore. Then Riaz invited him to Karachi to take over as the editor. I still remember the day when I went to see him off at  Lahore Railway Station and bade him farewell. So that was in early 70s and with that he bade goodbye to Lahore and took up his permanent abode in Karachi. Under his control, “The Cricketer” was transformed into an international standard magazine with quality printing and substance.  Gul  was also credited of introducing "the five Pakistani cricketers of the year" section which became an instant hit with cricket fans. But probably no journalist came to be as closely associated with the magazine as the indefatigable Gul Hameed Bhatti, guru of stats. He wrote for the magazine for years till he parted ways with it and joined “The News” and later rose to be the editor (sports) of all Jang Group of publications.

In 1978, he married Razia Bondray (later Razia Bhatti) who was then editor of “The Herald”. Both being journalists were a perfect match and lived happily thereafter. Had two children (Kamil and Sara). Razia in the meantime left Herald (in  fact forced to do so during the times of General Zia ul Haq) and opened her own “The Newsline”. But once again the democratic government of the time struck her and she under severe mental torture and harassment, had a brain haemorrhage and within hours she was no more. The departure of his beloved wife was a great shock and it was hard for him to take stock of the situation. But he did for his two growing children.

He also started writing about Hockey, Olympics and other sports related to Pakistan. He was seen on TV and Geo Super for which he wrote too. People around him respected him for his critical analysis and detailed reports. Once Anjum Niaz (the prominent writer and columnist) wrote, “I eagerly scan the sports pages to read the obituary of Masood Salahuddin. I am disappointed. Other than Gul Hameed Bhatti and M.U. Haq, the life and times of the great man have been overlooked. Why? It hurts to see the current czars of cricket ignore the men who took Pakistan cricket to dizzying heights that it could ever dream of reaching and that too only seven years after the country wrested independence from England”.  While one Sabina Ata writes about her interview with Gul for a vacancy at The News International. She says, “I remember how nervous I was, when I was called to meet the editor—Gul Hameed Bhatti. I had figured he was some really tough guy, who wouldn’t have time for a 20-year-old being the editor. When I went there, I was surprised to see a jovial man with a hearty laughter, willing to take time out to listen to me. A week later, I was hired as a trainee sub-editor and had to report to In charge Leisure page. We were supposed to compile a whole bunch of comic strips.”

He has always been in the limelight whenever and wherever cricket is played. He has been a member of the Committee for Cricketer of the Year Award set up by Pakistan Cricket Board under Lt Gen Tauqir Zia ®  and many such other committees and organizations.

Life wasn’t easy for him when he contracted cancer but he survived it. However, recently, he is again very sick (though reviving once again with sheer determination and support from his two children, daughter in law and friends/relatives). We all wish him great health and would very much want him back on his computer, writing those juicy comments and analysis synonymous to his name.
