Australian Open 2019 to be the First to feature Tie Breaks in Final Sets

Like all New Years, this New Year too starts with the big bang of the four Grand Slams that are played each year. Yes I am talking of the first of the Grand Slams that has just gone underway in Melbourne, Australia on 14th January. Te matches will continue till 27th January when the men's single final will be played. The winner will get a cash prise of A$4,100,000.

A galaxy of elite tennis stars including the defending champion Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and M Raonic. The women contesters include Serena Williams, the aging yet still dashing star from USA, besides Venus Williams, Miss Keys, Halep, Sevastova and many more.

This will be the first Australian Open to feature final set tie-breaks, which will be introduced in all match formats. If the match reaches 6–6 in the final set, the first player to score 10 points and be leading by at least 2 points wins the match.

Also for the first time in the men's singles competition, a 10-minute break due to heat will be allowed after the third set if the Australian Open Heat Stress Scale reaches 4.0 or higher.

Presently the Round of 32  is in progress with the only setback, a major setback, in which  Caroline Wozniacki,  the defending women's singles champion, was unsuccessful in her defense, losing in the third round to Maria Sharapova yesterday.

Titanic II - Rebirth of Titanic

Year 2012 celebrated the 100th anniversary of the maiden journey of the world's most expensive and biggest luxury liner of its time - Titanic. The legendary ship sailed from London to New York, but was never to be seen again as it hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and went down leaving some 1500 passengers dead.

Titanic became alive when the Oscar laced motion picture Titanic was released in the late 90s, with a fabricated love story featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The story of the sinking ship reminded the remaining survivors and the world in general the chilly moments of  its sinking and the chaos created due to non availability of the requisite number of boats, which if properly planned could have saved many of those who froze to death in the ice cold water of the Atlantic.

This April many people threw flowers at the exact site where the unfortunate Titanic rests in the Atlantic and said goodbye to the wreckage down below for the last time as those who were there may not be there in 2112 to repeat the ritual - and the Titanic was to be forgotten for next one hundred years.

Rebirth of Titanic - Titanic-II that sails on its maiden journey in 2016
But this is not going to be so, as from the wreckage of the ill fated Titanic, there emerges Titanic-II, a replica of the Titanic, which will sail most probably in 2016 on exactly the same route as did the the Titanic.

Titanic-II is the brainchild of an Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, who announced Monday 30th April that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II.

Palmer claims that:
"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems - a project that will be a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic."
Unlike the original Titanic which ran on coal power, the Titanic II will be diesel operated. But will have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, to make it look like the original Titanic and be remembered as such.

There would now be some modifications to the original designs, but mostly these will be in the portion that would remain under water. These would include welding rather than rivets, a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency and enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased maneuverability.

Although Titani II would look exactly like the same Titanic and would carry 1,680 passengers as did the Titanic, there would be one major difference - Titanic II will not be the biggest liner of the world as now much bigger ships sail with passenger capacity of over 2,000 passengers.  However, for the onlookers, the sailing of Titanic II would remind the jubilation and euphoria of that fateful day when the original Titanic sailed from London to its journey to the fathomless depths of the Atlantic.

For those travelers and tourists that still prefer to travel by sea, Titanic II should be a dream of tomorrow. When it sails in 2016, it would perhaps attract more world attention than did the original Titanic. Would you want to be aboard Titanic II on its maiden sail?

Australia for the jugular against the West Indies in Third and final Test - watch live online

As the third test between Australia and West Indies is hours away, Australia coach Mickey Arthur has been quoted as vowing that his team will go for the jugular against the West Indies in the third and final Test even if their full throttle assault backfires.

Well that is really a tall claim after the tourists won the first test with the second as a draw. But keeping in view the form of the tourists, the claim sounds maintainable - and a challenge to the hosts to prove the claim otherwise.

"I'd rather lose a Test match trying to win it than just play dull cricket, because then you don't learn anything about your players," added Arthur, ahead of the final Test which starts at Windsor Park on Monday. "You want to see players stand up in pressure situations. I'd rather that we went all out to win a game rather than just let a game meander."

The third test is being played at the Windsor Park - where the last test was played between the Eastern Indians, that is India and the West Indians 10 months ago - the match ended in a draw. It remains to be seen how the test between the hosts and the tourists go - whould australia really get the hosts jugular?

The opposing teams are as under:
West Indies: DJG Sammy*, AB Barath, CS Baugh†, KC Brathwaite, DM Bravo, S Chanderpaul, N Deonarine, FH Edwards, AB Fudadin, KOA Powell, R Rampaul, KAJ Roach, S Shillingford

Australia: MJ Clarke*, SR Watson, MA Beer, EJM Cowan, PJ Forrest, RJ Harris, BW Hilfenhaus, MEK Hussey, NM Lyon, PM Nevill†, JL Pattinson, RT Ponting, PM Siddle, MA Starc, MS Wade†, DA Warner

Australia vs West Indies: 2nd Test 15-19 April 2012

The landscape for the 2nd test match between the tourists from Australia and the hosts Windies changes to Queen's Park Oval, Trinidad, which gets into play from Sunday 15th April till 19th April 2012 - or may be earlier!!

The tourists showed a remarkable recovery after the hosts put up a formidable target of 449 in the first innings of the first test and then had the courage, resilience and strength to win over an otherwise draw or a lost match.

Today, the hosts have a bigger target infront of them than they had in the first test - they HAVE TO WIN, lest they want to be subdued and humiliated in their own home. The tourists have already routed India when the latter visited Australia recently, and even won the TriNation championship against Sri Lanka after osuting India from it. This has raised their morale manifold and are in a charging mood as they exhibited in the first test and the foresight and decisive ability.

Australian Coach Mickey Arthur on Clarke's declaration decisons said:
"I thought it was a great idea and I sort of just backed him on it - Micheal needs ro all the plaudits fr that becasue it was a brave desicion that worked out for us."
With this let us turn to the 2nsd test that goes underway some hours from now.

Australi played at the Queen's Park oval nine years ago and of the squad only Ponting remains in the team to revisit the same grass again. The tourists could not practice much on the ground as rains came and training was abandoned. But the hosts were lucky to have cmpleted their training before water poured from the skies.

Australia is considering employing to specialist spinners: Nathan Lyon and Beer could be these two. As for the Windies, they would have loved to have Sunil Narine, who hails from the Queens's Park, but his committment with IPL leaves the Widnies abandoned and handicapped. Now instead they would have Shane Shillingford, who last played test cricket in 2010.

The likely opposing teams are:
Australia: 1 Ed Cowan, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson (vice-captain), 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (captain), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Matthew Wade (wicket-keeper), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Nathan Lyon/Michael Beer

West Indies: 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Kraigg Brathwaite, 3 Kirk Edwards (vice-captain), 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul , 6  Narsingh Deonarine, 7 Carlton Baugh (wicket-keeper), 8 Darren Sammy (captain), 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Fidel Edwards, 11 Devendra Bishoo/ Shane Shillingford

Venue: Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad
Scheduled time: 10:00 Local | 14:00 GMT

Australia vs Sri Lanka: A crucial Match that may decide the fate of 3rd ODI

Today, 6 March, is a crucial day for Sri Lanka and Australia both. If Sri Lanka wins, it levels off the ODI final series by 1-1, which means the winner of the Tri Nation Commonwealth Bank Series cricket will be decided in the third match. But f Australia wins, it is all over for Sri Lanka and Australia wins the series.
It may be added that India after having a rough season in Australia has already gone back after being out shined by Sri Lanka.

In the first ODI, Australia had a dramatic victory at Brisbane. But would Sri Lanka allow them a repeat performance?  Australia have not won two consecutive games since the opening two round robin matches and so they face a tough assignment here against a Sri Lankan side eager to get back to winning ways.

The second ODI at  Adelaide  Oval is thus very important and may end up to be the series decider, keeping in view the Australians' resilience and determination to command the series.

For today's match, Australia have replaced Ben Hilfenhaus with Clint McKay and for Sri Lanka, Chamara Kapugedara comes in place of Dammika Prasad. Hilfenhaus and Pattinson, together went for 95 runs in nine overs on Sunday and may be wanted for a repat performance. For Sri Lanka, openers captain Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan, may also be needed for more a more aggressive attacking approach in the early overs to set a winning mood for the rest of the team.

The opposing teams for today's match are:

Sri Lanka: TM Dilshan, DPMD Jayawardene*, KC Sangakkara†, LD Chandimal, HDRL Thirimanne, WU Tharanga, CK Kapugedera, MF Maharoof, KMDN Kulasekara, SL Malinga, HMRKB Herath

Australia: MS Wade†, DA Warner, SR Watson, MJ Clarke*, MEK Hussey, DJ Hussey, DT Christian, B Lee, JL Pattinson, XJ Doherty, CJ McKay

The match starts at: 3:20 GMT

Cow and the City

When I was in school, I learnt that there is a city in between Lahore and Multan known as Montgomery (founded in 1865 and named for Sir Robert Montgomery, then lieutenant governor of the Punjab)  – I also learnt that the ruins of an ancient city Harappa, dated 3000-5000 BC also lay near Montgomery. And like a good student, I remembered it by heart.  Then many years later in 1966, its name was changed to Sahiwal – and again I registered the new name. But it was years later when I was shocked to know of my ignorance about Sahiwal when I was adding this city in my website on Pakistan. And I want to share it with all those who still do not know much about Sahiwal.

Sahiwal is the name of a cow which is famous for its milk giving capacity and is native to the area – and hence, the city takes its name from its proud possession.

The Sahiwal breed was so special that it was  taken to Australia in the early 1950s, where it was initially selected as a dual-purpose breed. It played a valuable role in the development of the two Australian tropical dairy breeds, the Australian Milking Zebu and the Australian Fresian Sahiwal. Sahiwals are now predominately used in Australia for beef production, as crossing high grade Sahiwal sires with Bos taurus animals produced a carcass of lean quality with desirable fat cover. Australians have so much affection for this special cow that in 2002 a cargo ship previously known as "Limousin Express" was renamed as the "Sahiwal Express".

Left: Sahiwal Express - Right: "Sahiwal"

I am much wiser now – so should be all readers who didn’t know about it before reading this blog of mine.

A day that was waited for 15 years

Pakistan Is passing through rough times these days. Open a newspaper or switch n a TV channel news, there are news of war on (t)error, target killings in Karachi, life loss due to excessive monsoons. No news is there to rejoice.

But then Pakistan cricket team provided a window of hope and rejoice. The win over the Australians in the second test at Leeds, England was a great day for Pakistan. A team that was feared all over the world, crumbled to Pakistan’s bowlers in both innings and then the Pakistani batsmen brought the victory more closer in its second innings. Imrans’s 67 and Azhar’s 51 were the match winners. Although, at one time with seven down, Pakistan’s victory was overcast, but it was Gul who scored the winning run to bring home a much awaited victory.

The test was also a unique day for Umpire Rudi Koertzen, who was umpiring his 108th and last test before retiring. Rudi was given a befitting guard of honor by the players as he walked on to the field.

The victory against Australia after 15 years is a a good omen both for Pakistan cricket and the new incumbent captain Salman Butt. Salman Butt should be the happiest person to win his very first test as captain and that too against Australia. So it is best of luck to the Pakistan’s cricket team and we hope they demonstrate the same team spirit as they showed recently.
