Titanic II - Rebirth of Titanic

Year 2012 celebrated the 100th anniversary of the maiden journey of the world's most expensive and biggest luxury liner of its time - Titanic. The legendary ship sailed from London to New York, but was never to be seen again as it hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and went down leaving some 1500 passengers dead.

Titanic became alive when the Oscar laced motion picture Titanic was released in the late 90s, with a fabricated love story featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The story of the sinking ship reminded the remaining survivors and the world in general the chilly moments of  its sinking and the chaos created due to non availability of the requisite number of boats, which if properly planned could have saved many of those who froze to death in the ice cold water of the Atlantic.

This April many people threw flowers at the exact site where the unfortunate Titanic rests in the Atlantic and said goodbye to the wreckage down below for the last time as those who were there may not be there in 2112 to repeat the ritual - and the Titanic was to be forgotten for next one hundred years.

Rebirth of Titanic - Titanic-II that sails on its maiden journey in 2016
But this is not going to be so, as from the wreckage of the ill fated Titanic, there emerges Titanic-II, a replica of the Titanic, which will sail most probably in 2016 on exactly the same route as did the the Titanic.

Titanic-II is the brainchild of an Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, who announced Monday 30th April that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II.

Palmer claims that:
"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems - a project that will be a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic."
Unlike the original Titanic which ran on coal power, the Titanic II will be diesel operated. But will have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, to make it look like the original Titanic and be remembered as such.

There would now be some modifications to the original designs, but mostly these will be in the portion that would remain under water. These would include welding rather than rivets, a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency and enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased maneuverability.

Although Titani II would look exactly like the same Titanic and would carry 1,680 passengers as did the Titanic, there would be one major difference - Titanic II will not be the biggest liner of the world as now much bigger ships sail with passenger capacity of over 2,000 passengers.  However, for the onlookers, the sailing of Titanic II would remind the jubilation and euphoria of that fateful day when the original Titanic sailed from London to its journey to the fathomless depths of the Atlantic.

For those travelers and tourists that still prefer to travel by sea, Titanic II should be a dream of tomorrow. When it sails in 2016, it would perhaps attract more world attention than did the original Titanic. Would you want to be aboard Titanic II on its maiden sail?

Beware Credit Card Holders: Your card details can be 'stolen - thanks to new contactless technology

At a time when use of credit cards and the notion of paperless money is expanding the world over, there are now concerns that someone passing by you in the streets may 'rob you of your credit card details' and use these for stealing your money.

Insecure: Radio frequency identification (RFID), transmits bank details via its own radio signal and could be a fraud risk
The RFID technology may make it easier to rob your credit card details [Photo: Getty Images/Mail Online]

Although the emerging 'contact-less technology' is yet to come to this part of the world - but it wouldn't be long for a handheld device of mere seven pounds to throng the local markets and made use of by the criminals to rob you even when your credit card is securely tucked in your wallet in the hi pocket of your trousers or the hand held ladies' purses.

Mail Online in its recent post has warned about the misuse of contact-less technology:

Millions of credit and debit card users could be ‘robbed by radiowave’ because of new contactless technology being brought in by banks.
Almost 20million shoppers are now able to buy goods by simply waving their card in front of a reader at the tills, even if it is still in a wallet or a purse.
But industry experts have warned that the information emitted by the cards can be stolen by fraudsters using handheld receptors that cost as little as £7 on the internet.
It means cardholders – most of whom are given a contact-less card automatically when their old one expires – can unknowingly surrender their personal bank details to a thief by simply walking past them in the street.
The technology in the card, known as radio frequency identification (RFID), transmits bank details via its own radio signal, and is accepted in many High Street chains, including Co-op, Boots and Pret-a-Manger.

Travel Pakistan to walk into the history of Ancient Civilizations

There are very few countries in the world which have seen the dawn and death of great civilizations since  7000 BC when the greater Egyptian civilization was at its peak. And certainly Pakistan is one of those history rich countries, which have roots embeded in the history so majestically that only those visiting the ruins can feel the grandeur of the people who once inhibited this part of the world.

It is for this reason that Pakistan is known as the melting pot of cultures and civilizations.

The Mehrgarh and Indus Valley Civilizations, the Gandhara, Arabs, Afghans, Mongols, Moguls, Persians, Turks and finally the British besides the indigenous customs and traditions have had a profound effect on the culture and traditions of Pakistan. The climatic conditions and different geographical regions from sea cost to deserts, plains to snow clad mountains have further magnified our culture.

An onlooker would therefore find varying architecture, languages, dress and food as one moves from south to north, or from east to west.

Mehrgarh civilization in the foot hills of Bolan Pass and arid Kachi plain of Balochistan province of Pakistan is the the earliest known farming settlement in South Asia, which once thrived around 7000 BC until the end of Indus valley civilization. Neolithic Mehrgarh consists of four mounds. The remains show that around 5100 BC, the Mehrgarh inhabitants constructed mud-brick structures. The remains of a large town spread over some 170 acres makes it the largest in the ancient world, being five times the size of the contemporary Catal Huyuk site in Turkey which has been called the largest Neolithic site in the Near East. It may be added that the entire population of Egypt was around 30,000 persons around 6000 BC, almost same as of Mehrgarh alone.

Many believe that Indus Valley civilization has been the oldest civilization that flourished in the Indian subcontinent. Mehrgarh Civilization, though broke this myth, there were yet other surprises. The excavations at Kot Diji, Sind Pakistan has revealed that before Indus Valley, there existed a civilization that is pre-Harappa and Harappa period occupations (ca. 3200-2000 BC).  A forty-feet high archaeological site reflects the grandeur of the past and craftsmanship of those people. Historians and archaeologists are of the opinion that Indus Valley Civilization borrowed or developed some of the basic elements of life and culture from the civilization that was thriving at Kot Diji.

The later period of Indus Valley civilization from 2400-1800 BC, there is marked improvement in system of weights and measures, identical sized fire-backed bricks and standard writing system. So far about 700 sites have been discovered relating to the Indus Valley. Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, and Ganweiwala are the larger sites of all spread over some 120 hectares and constructed like a citadel with separate public and residential areas, interspersed with road network. Extensive sewage and water drainage systems also are unique to Indus settlements.

Gandhara and Buddhism are two civilizations that thrived in the northern parts of Pakistan from around the Vedic times and Greco-Buddhism is considered to be the cultural syncretism between the culture of Classical Greece and Buddhism, which developed over a period of close to 800 years in the area corresponding to modern-day Afghanistan and Pakistan, between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE. Greco-Buddhism influenced the artistic (and, possibly, conceptual) development of Buddhism, before it was adopted by Central and Northeastern Asia from the 1st century CE, ultimately spreading to China, Korea and Japan.

And before I forget to mention of a people who have yet to find a credible linkage to their ancestors so far - the Kafir "Kalash: Who are these people, no one knows for sure. There are many theories - the most popular being the one that take these people to the Alexander of Macedonia: The Persian emperor Cyrus the Great conquered part of the Punjab somewhere around 530 BC, while Alexander the Great conquered area up to Multan before his own troops forced him to turn back in 332 BC. Some believe that the "Kafir Kalash" tribe in northern areas of Pakistan (Chitral) are the decendants of those Greek soldiers who married the locals and left their imprints behind. The "Kalash Country" is spread over three Valleys; Bomboret, Birir and Rumbur in the remote mountains of Chitral in the northern mountains of Pakistan.

Read more about the civilizations that once thrived in the areas of the present day Pakistan, specially the Kalash people who live in  a world of their own obscured behind high mountains.

At the WTA Stuttgate Final, two of the top women player, Azarenka and Sharapova will collide for the gold on Suday 29th April.

World No.1 Azarenka was the first to make the final, taking down world's No.4 Agnieszka Radwanska with no problem (6-1, 6-3) .

Whereas the second semifinal was much tougher in contrast with the first semi-final that went lika a breeze. Kvitova Vs Sharapova: WTA Stuttgart Second Semifinal

In the second semi final of the WTA Stuttgart, World Number Two Russian Maria Sharapova faces 3rd ranked Czech Petra Kvitova at Stuttgart Saturday.
Second Semi Final WTA Stuttgart: Kvitova [L] Vs Sharapova [R]

The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou

When I was a child, we had a long playing record labeled 'Music for an Arabian Night.' The melodies contained in the record were so fascinating and amazing that we brothers would play it agaian and agaian to enjoy the recreated melodies played in western style by the then famous musician Ron Goodwin. Some of my favourites were 'The moon and I,  Return to Paradise and Arab Feast, Old Beirut and the Barefoot Girl.'

The jacket cover of the LP Music for an Arabian Night by Ron Goodwin
The Arab world has its own mysteries and life, which is unique and almost obscure from the rest of the world. The Arab music, culture, traditions and even architectures is most fascinating, awesome and dreamy. Although the present day Arab world has been westernized, the real life still continues in the deserts amid clumps of date trees, with camels moving about and their neck bells ringing and a strange aura that seems to have filled up the environment and one can feel that there is something special about the place.

Talking of the Arab architecture, one comes across magnificent mud plastered castles surrounded with date trees as one can see in films like the Prince of Persia, The Pearl of Nile, Jesus of Nazareth and many Hollywood films. But have you ever wondered where are these magnificent castles and building actually located?

One of the fortified town that figures out prominently in the Hollywood films is the Ait Ben Haddou - Ksar (fortified town) in southern Morocco, 29 kilometers north-west of Ouarzazate. Since 1987 under the protection of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Now scroll down and a familiar site will start to unfold, specially if you have a flare of mystic Arab world and its architecture.

Ait Ben Haddou is located on the left bank of Ouarzazate on the hillside. The valley of the river passes through the wilderness river begins on the southern slopes of the High Atlas and subsequently lost in the sands of the Sahara. She ran along the caravan route from Marrakech through Zagora to Timbuktu.
Ksar presumably originated in the XI century to protect the caravanroute. After the trans-Saharan trade of importance was in decline, the population gradually moved to a new village on the opposite (right) side of the river. By the 1990s, was in Ksar ruinirovannom state, lived there only ten families. In recent years, is being restored, it is supposed toturn into a tourist center of Ksar and place it in the galleries.

For the Hollywood filmmakers, the Ksar is one of the extremely popular as a place of movies in varying degrees, using oriental subjects. Some of the famous movies that were filmed here include:

  • Lawrence of Arabia (1962) The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
  • Jesus of Nazareth (1977)
  • Time Bandits (1981)
  • Jewel of the Nile (1985)
  • The Living Daylights (1987)
  • The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
  • The Sheltering Sky (1990)
  • Kundun (1997)
  • The Mummy (1999)>br> Gladiator (2000)
  • Alexander (2004)
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (film) (2010)

Ksar Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most typical examples of traditional Moroccan clay architecture prevalent in predsaharskoy area south of the High Atlas. All the houses are built of Ksara red-brown clay. Houses with flat roofs are located on the hillside terraces, the streets are horizontally connected by arches and narrow passages.

In Ksar has four inputs, two free (far left and far right) and two toll. Free entry leads through a gate in the wall, while the charge passed through the home and belong to two families, one of the entrances to the museumis
located.

I'll be watching you ..

Man has so far been exploring outer space, watching the unexplored mysteries and limits of the universe with Hubble Telescope and sending spacecrafts and even men on planets to know more about what we see from earth.

But perhaps that is tiring as one cannot explore the extent of the universe that has no bounds. Therefore, man is now going back to the phenomenon of someone watching us from the outer world - but this time it will be 'us' watching 'us' from the International Space Station (ISS).

This reminds me of the famous song by Sting and Police:
Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
So be ready from now on the be watched from the space!!

UrtheCast is launching the world's first ever high definition, streaming video platform of planet Earth. The camera will be installed on the outside of the International Space Station through a joint effort with the Russian Space Agency. The camera will provide a 40 km wide, high resolution, color image down to as close as 1.1 metres.

Watch the video below of the concept developed by the UrtheCast:

HD cameras mounted on the station to stream near real-time video of Earth 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will be the first-ever HD streaming video feed of Earth from space, and will let viewers discern objects as small as one meter wide.

The cameras will continuously film Earth as the station orbits the planet about 15 times per day. Footage will be down-linked to ground stations, then immediately streamed via Urthecast.com co-founder Scott Larson  expects to provide footage every second for five to ten years.

Alexander's March: Pella, Greece, to Jalalpur Sharif Pakistan

Alexander of Macedonia [Photo: Howard David Johnson Illustrator ]
The Salt Range derives its name from extensive deposits of rock salt. The Range stands as remnant of forts with bastions and temples. Exceptionally, this region maintains an almost continuous record of history that can define the evolution of society. Forts and temples surviving along the range are a reminder of how untouched many of the ancient remnants are. Alexander from Macedon came to this Range twice; one from Taxila and later when his forces refused to go any further from the banks of the River Beas. From here he marched towards the Arabian Sea on his way to Babylon.

And, now an NGO is constructing a monument of Alexander near Jalalpur town in the foot of the Salt Range in district Jhelum.

Map showing Alexander's March from Pella, Greece, to Jalalpur Sharif Pakistan - 326 BC
For those who take their first chance to the area, the landscape all along the Salt Range is rock-strewn, lacking in softness and loveliness. In many parts, it becomes barren and uninviting. But, in truth the range is dotted with historical wonders, romantic legends, archaeological remains, and varying geological formations. Surroundings are very quiet. Urial is also found in the Range though facing extinction. A journey along the range is exiting as well as informative.

After crossing the River Jhelum from Rasul Barrage, one passes through Rasul Barrage Wildlife Sanctuary. Environs are green and the wetland is full of lotus. Flocks of Siberians Cranes and Strokes and local black winged Stilts are the common sights in the area. Though at the dawn of a hot June day, I was able to see only few Tobas perching over their morning catch and a few flocks of Murghabis (wild ducks).

Turn west along the Range from Mishri Mor bus stop in the beautiful 'bela' of the River Jhelum and the road will take you to the town of Jalalpur. One could come on this road from Jhelum side but these days the Jhelum-Pind Dadan Khan Road is closed due to want of bridges on the torrents coming down the range to join River Jhelum so you can only come through Rasul Barrage. The River Jhelum used to flow full to the capacity but now it remains mostly dry. Water of the River Jhelum is transferred from Rasul Barrage to the River Chenab for strategic water management in the country.

Jalalpur Sharif, as the town is called, is opposite village Mong where the conflict between Alexander and Porus took place. Mong used to be the garrison of King Porus who had assembled 30,000 men, 2000 cavalry, and 200 elephant to fight against the Macedonians.

Right on the Jhelum-Pind Dadan Khan Road, tucked inside the Salt Range, is ancient Jalalpur that was built by Alexander in the memory of his general who was killed in the battle with Porus. Coins found among the ruins date back to the period of Graeco-Bactrian kings. Remains of the ancient walls are still there at the summit of the hill, which rise 1000 feet above the present-day Jalalpur.

It is at Jalalpur that in the absence of any route marking or sign posting, we started asking for the monument that is being made in the memory of Alexander. An old driver came up to help and gave us some directions to go onto a road leading to village Wagh inside the range where we were to find the unfinished monument structure.

The structure of the monument stands on the bank of a torrent, which flows during rainy seasons. The towering pedestal is very graceful and on the platform stands a room. On the roof of the wide room, and flanked by Grecian style arches, is painted a map of Alexander's empire from Greece to South Asia showing the route (Hund - Taxila - Jalalpur - Beas - back to Jalalpur and to the Arabian sea along River Jhelum) he followed in this part of the world.

There is no doubt that this scenic place could be turned into a lucrative and busy tourist attraction and may be a research facility. Presently, not much is going on and thorny bushes are placed on the stairs to stop any one going up on the roof to see the map. The colors of the map are already peeling. The pits all around the monument suggest that some trees were also planted but only a couple of them have survived. Names of the donors have been written in different colors (along with the legend for the color code) on the wall facing road. There was no one, not even a janitor, who could tell us about the current state of affairs or why the construction work has been stopped. Why? Lack of funds, lack of interest, or both!?

Alexander was undoubtedly a man of great substance: "He was an illustrious soldier who always followed the rules of war. He brought disciplines of medicine (Tibb-e-Yunani) and philosophy to what is now Pakistan. More than two thousand years ago he recognized the enormous potential in terms of commerce and trade of the immediate hinterland of Karachi. He called this place the bridge between east and west," reads a report of Wildlife and Environment Quarterly. Not always. Travel writer and researcher Salman Rashid says Alexander did not only get away with murdering 7,000 soldiers from the central subcontinent who had joined the Pakhtoons in an attempt to defend the Masaga Fort, he also gives him a lenient title of a daghabaaz (at its most mundane a fraud, at worst a cheat). And, "we all by now know that it takes a general more than this to conquer the world," adds Ashaar Rahman.

People with time and will to explore are constantly looking for quiet and new destinations. Locally, if nothing else, this monument could give a boost to rural tourism and economy.

UEFA Champions League Semi Final: Barcelona Vs Chelsea - Free Live Streaming

Chelsea is travelling to Barcelona for a Tuesday night duel that may take the Blues to the Champions League final - or it may provide an opportunity for the defending Champions for a comeback they need to make back-to-back finals. What do you say?

Hold on Barca!! Chelsea has something for tonight
For Barcelona - the defending champions, just one goal is needed as they trail it from the first leg. Therefore Barca must win tonight by at least two goals to advance to the final.

But there are other factors that also needed to be kept in view: Some say that history is not on the side of Barcelona in its semifinal series with Chelsea. Only twice in nine series has a team come back from a 1-0 loss in the first leg to go through to the final. And only four out of 23 times has a team lost the first leg of the semifinals and advanced.

Chelsea won the first leg, but Barcelona still managed to out-shoot the Blues, 19-4, in London. Chelsea will have to keep its shape in the second leg or it will be under total siege. And for this, Roberto di Matteo insists that Chelsea will not simply sit back in Tuesday night's second leg of the Champions League semi-final with Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Well we wait and see how each of the two teams go into the field and devise what means to realize their options to succeed.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday 24 April 2012 at 18:45 GMT
