My New Blog - Management Matters

Well I have been writing randomly in my blog for quite sometime now and have touched upon various subjects in one single blog. Today, however, when I wrote “If I only had time, it beamed into me like a spark – a new idea and a the birth of a new blog from me.

The subject of management has over the years become a very important discipline and is taken very seriously by those who are wanting to become managers or are already in the management system of an organization. Those already in it would know that management has become a complete science and without understanding the basic structure of the atom, they would lag in the competitive corporate world. Thus the need to study management with a microscope.

So my new blog (stay tuned for the launch on Jan 1, 2010) would focus entirely on “Management Matters ” and we all know it really Matters. I would focus on various facets of management, and would relate it to some of the best blogs and managers on the net so as to provide a link between various tiers of management, its requirement and much more. So read on ….

If I only had Time

I often see people lamenting for not having time for them alone, their families and friends. Everyone is so engrossed into his work, his office and elsewhere that he is always short of time for people around him or people who love him. It seems that 'time deficit' is one of the main challenges facing most people face today and not knowing how to overcome this syndrome. Perhaps people forget that there probably is no other skill that one can muster that will give them a greater return than to become extremely knowledgeable and experienced in using time management practices.

We all know that time cannot be saved – days pass by, leaving us more frustrated for not having one that, that and that and so on. But if we spend our time wisely, efficiently and productively, here won’t be any lamentations afterwards.

There comes a “time” in ones life, when he is afforded an opportunity when one can do things one had been wanting to do all one’s life. Those who cash the opportunity are the ones who have no regrets afterwards. But I see so many who have opportunities but wait for yet another better opportunity and then lose everything. I once had an opportunity and I really cashed on to it and did what many people before me in that office could not and waited for better days. So when I decided to do many things that I wanted, I was amazed to see all hurdles giving way one by one and I accomplished almost everything that I had on my mind. And I could do it by thinking through and planning my goal posts in advance that dramatically reduced the amount of time it took me to do the actual job.

I then came to know the secret of successful men and women in the enterprising world. They are effective and efficient. And above all can manage time to conform to their plans and ideas, that take them to their goalposts exactly, or nearly exactly, as per their schedule of work.

So those who say that there is too much to do and so little time they have, are in fact people who do not value time and schedule it properly. For such people there cannot be a better thing than to sit back and listen to John Rowel’s “If I only had time.”

What do we need more – IQ or EI

Whenever we are talking of gauging a man’s intelligence, we always refer to his IQ and when one fails to achieve a laid down standard, we label the subject as having low or poor IQ. But do we really need to depend on his IQ alone?  A quotient mainly and largely dependant on his level of education from which he draws his logical reasoning, math skills, spatial skills, understanding analogies, verbal skills etc. But we often find people with higher IQ doing miserably in their practical life. And on the contrary, more often than not, we find people with lower educational certification or none at al faring much better in their own sphere of expertise. So what should be relying on more – the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) or the Emotional Intelligence (EI).
While doing a research on Human Resource Management and Behavioural Development during my MBA, I got a chance to read more about the IQ and the EI and it was then I realized that for doing better in one’s life both at home and in work area, a person with average IQ but a higher degree of EI is likely to succeed more for a case which is vice-a-versa.
EI in fact is related to social boldness and emotional stability. It strongly correlated with managerial self assessment as well. EI scores significantly predicted managerial effectiveness.  In fact emotional intelligence has emerged as an effective predictor of job performance. Emotional intelligence involves abilities, competencies and skills related to understanding of oneself and others, and adapting to changing environmental situations and demands.
When I view the on going crisis in the country wherein we are threatened with situations that require prompt, sudden and instantaneous responses, I find crisis management suffering because of the weak EI of the people involved in the field. Even the media tends to adopt a hyper approach and blows news and incidents out of the proportion which leaves a negative impact on the audience and the world. If recalled, sometimes back an ex finance minister spoke badly of Pakistan’s economy, his reasoning was more emotionally attached to his political affiliation rather than favouring the national interest – the end result?? An instant down grading of country’s financial rating by an international financial monitoring agency.  In fact the honourable ex minister failed to take more responsibility his feelings and failed to use his feelings to show respect for others and that of his country.
So as I understand of EI, I am now convinced that all personnel occupying higher slots of the government, organizations and companies must be introduced to the study of EI and be occasionally tested and guided by experts on EI if any emotional failings are observed. People with low EI may not be elevated to levels where even a slip of tongue could result into disastrous consequences.
