Keeping fresh water for you pet is a must when you are traveling. This is particularly important in hot climates. One way of insuring cool, fresh water is to rinse out a two liter drink bottle, fill it, and freeze it before you leave. As it melts it will provide your pet with the liquid they need to survive.
  1. Be flexible. If your travel dates can be tweaked by a day or two, try using the "flexible dates" feature of most online travel search engines. This allows you to search departure and return dates within a given range. By just changing your dates by a day or two, you may be able to score huge savings on airfare.
  2. When planning to travel to a country that uses a very different language or even alphabet than your own, it's a good idea to get precise, up to date information about exactly how to travel to hotel bookings or sites of interest ahead of time. Often, maps or travel guides won't go into the amount of detail necessary, so make sure to have a custom map which shows everything you'll need.
  3. When traveling by plane, it is best to know the limits the individual airline places on luggage. Try to pack light and be sure your baggage meets the limits set by their airline. Also, keep in mind that some airlines charge for checked luggage after the first piece. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to packing.
  4. Look for an airline that will refund you part of your fare if its price drops between the moment you reserve and the day of the flight. Not all the airlines offer this service. Look for flights from SouthWest, Alaska or Jet Blue to benefit from this excellent service.
  5. When making travel plans, remember that in the US, the Americans With Disabilities Act gives you protection against discrimination; however, this is not true in other countries. You will want to take extra care in making provisions for your trip. Be certain the airlines and other transport services are aware of and can accommodate your special needs. Get a clear understanding of how and where your assistive devices will be transported. If you have special dietary requirements, be sure to make arrangements for them in advance.
  6. Don't hold on to your frequent flyer miles for too long, since they may well expire before you get around to using them. Miles often expire 18 months after you earn them, so use them while you can. If you don't need to fly, you may be able to trade them in for magazines or other rewards.
  7. If the hotel you're staying in doesn't offer free wifi, try asking for a room on the first or second floor. Most of the time in cities, there are tons of cafes around that offer free wifi and you can pick those signals up when you're on the lower floors.

Smart travelers have a smart routine that keeps their travel plans running smoothly and that makes every trip, no matter where or why, as easy as possible. Tips like the above can help everyone travel smarter, from the most world-weary traveler to the fresh-faced new traveler setting out on his or her first adventure.
