Visit 'Pole of Cold' - the coldest place in the world - where mercury dips to -71C in winters

What could be the coldest place on earth -  Antarctica or the Arctic?

Well these places are uninhibited and measuring the the chill and the cold is otherwise meaningless. But what about a place where people live and where mercury dips to -71C in winters - making it so cold that even planes cannot land there in winters.

Monument marking the record-breaking temperature of -71.2 recorded in the village in 1924. It reads 'Oymyakon, the Pole of Cold'

The valley of Oymyakon in northeast Russia is known as the 'Pole of Cold' and with an average January temperature of -50C, it is no wonder the village is the coldest permanently inhabited settlement in the world. And here is the village of Oymyakon which has the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location, -71C.

This is the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location on Earth and the lowest temperature recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

Ironically, Oymyakon actually means 'non-freezing water' due to a nearby hot spring.

The village, which is home to about 500 people, was, in the 1920s and 1930s, a stopover for reindeer herders who would water their flocks from the thermal spring. But the Soviet government, in its efforts to settle nomadic populations, believing them to be difficult to control and technologically and culturally backward, made the site a permanent settlement.

It is so cold in winters that burying of the dead  can take anything up to three days. The earth must first be thawed sufficiently in order to dig it, so a bonfire is lit for a couple of hours. Hot coals are then pushed to the side and a hole a couple of inches deep is dug. The process is repeated for several days until the hole is deep enough to bury the coffin.

I am sure you want to know more about the place before planning a 'visit' to Oymyakon. watch the video below before making any such move:

Dad!!

Though it is not the Father's Day, but I just found the poster below on Facebook that took me back many many years beck in my memory lane - the days when I was growing.

Rather I would say being 'grown into being a man.' And I remembered my father who reared me with all the knowledge he had to be a man.

He was always there when I needed him, though he was rough and tough and a difficult man, but one really needed to understand and feel the enormous love he had not for me but all my siblings.  And how too true that anyone can be your father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.

Yes - he was something special. He was my Dad. I know he is waiting there for me up in the heavens.

I share here a few comments that my well wishers left on Facebook - for which am truly grateful:
Mehwish Agha: wahhh roub ho to aisa .....
Ghazala Moazzam: graceful.

Dubai unveils plan for world’s largest underwater hotel

Travelers all over the world are always looking for places that are unique, different, eye catching and soothing. And they move from one place to the other in search of such places, whether natural or man made.

Likewise, architects, engineers and investors on the other hand are always innovating to attract tourists and travelers to their countries.

Despite having no oil  the rulers of Dubai have made Dubai so much attractive with its tallest tower of the world, Burj Khalifa, the biggest shopping centre with an amazing music fountain of Dubai Mall and the Palm Beach city developed entirely on sea.

Now Dubai has unveiled plans for the world's largest under water hotel - to be known as The Water Discus Hotel, brainchild of Polish company Deep Ocean Technology, assisted by Swiss firm BIG InvestConsult AG.

Designers claim the entire hotel is transferable and that pods are buoyant.

The bizarrely shaped building, looking more akin to something you would travel to space in rather than go for a luxury break, comprises two large disc-shaped sections, connected by a long narrow shaft containing stairs and a lift.

The hotel will feature 21 suites, an underwater bar and diving centre.
