Finally it is here – the World Cup 2010

After long waits and speculations, the coveted World Cup is just days from now. The proceedings open with host South Africa battling Mexico. The match will be played at 7:00pm (Pakistan Time) followed by France vs Uruguay (viewers in Pakistan can witness the match at 11:30pm).

So finally it is here. Temperatures rising and the whole world is focused on innumerable sports channels airing matches of the cup. The unique thing about the 2010 World Cup is that this will be the first time in the history of the event that the tournament will be hosted by an African country, after South Africa defeated Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. Ten stadiums have been chosen to host the matches, with tow stadiums in Johannesburg alone. The tournament will be played from 11 June to 11 July – so it is going to be one long month of excitement, lip biting, tension, surprises and disappointments. The opening celebrations will be held for two days with a big concert that will include performers like Shakira on Thursday before the performance of an unnamed artist at Friday's official ceremony. The Thursday concert will be broadcasted live from Orlando Stadium, located in the heart of Johannesburg's Soweto township. Shakira will be singing the tournament's official song "Waka Waka, meaning “This Time for Africa", with pop group Freshlyground from South Africa.

And the big question – who will lift the cup? I made some speculations in my first post on the Cup, World Cup Frenzy, posted in December 2009. Let us keep watching and deleting the losers till we reach the grand finale. Let us all be part of this complete one month of excitement and also be part of the history.
